Wrt1900ac openvpn client
I signed up for a VPN service and (inadvertently) purchased the WRT 3200 with the expectation that it would support OpenVPN. Now I understand that it can only act as an OpenVPN server and cannot connect to the internet as a client. I can flash new firmware if I want to do that.
I’m not sure why; this isn’t hard for the manufacturers to incorporate, and it’s of particular interest to an increasing number of people, so it’s a selling point that’s being overlooked.
If my memory serves me right, the WRT line of routers clearly means that they will run dd-wrt. They didn’t put dd-wrt on the box at the factory; instead, they put their normal picture on it. I haven’t seen a Linksys box in a long time.
Pfsense and other routers have excellent documentation. PIA creates a step-by-step guide for setting it up. They provide instructions for a number of routers. Check to see if one exists for ddwrt or openwrt. You can choose one of them. You’ll need to research the various encryption types to see what speeds you can expect. On a brand new Intel with AES-NI, openvpn 256bit can only get around 600Mbs. Some 1W routers are only capable of 1% of that.

Linksys WRT1900AC is a router from Linksys. A complete tunnel can be created, but the configuration change must be made in the OpenVPN client file. It took me a while to find it out, but your suggestion seemed to be fairly easy to implement. On a 1900ACS v2, it works fine, but the other end of my connection is a rural ADSL2 connection with a speed of only 2MB/s, so I can’t comment on VPN results. What is the output of the WRT1900ACS VPN?
