When Word opens a new document or opens an existing document, you can use the AutoExec and AutoOpen macros to set default paths, styles, connections, environment conditions, and so on. This article describes how macros function and how they act in different scenarios.
If the AutoOpen macro is saved as part of the document or the prototype on which the document is based, it runs when the document is opened. When an AutoOpen macro is saved as part of a global add-in, it does not run. When you open a text, hold down the Shift key to prevent an AutoOpen macro from running.

Word macros are one-button wizards that allow you to program complex procedures to run at your command. To get you started, here are a few examples. The first produces your business letterhead; the second inserts pre-formatted tables; and the third identifies and designs custom book formats.
