What is section width
How to read tire sizes and specifications?
(a) The nominal section width, nominal aspect ratio, type-of-structure symbol (where applicable), and nominal rim diameter shall be grouped as shown in the above example: 185/70 R 14 185/70 R 14 185/70 R 14 http://eur-lex.europa.eu/
A classification displaying the nominal section width, nominal aspect ratio, and the traditional number that denotes the nominal rim diameter is referred to as a tyre size designation (these terms are further defined in Regulation No 30). http://eur-lex.europa.eu/
(a) The size classification, which includes the nominal section width, nominal aspect ratio, type-of-structure symbol (if applicable), and nominal rim diameter, must be grouped as shown in the preceding example: 295/80 R 22,5 295/80 R 22,5 295/80 R 22,5 http://eur-lex.europa.eu/
The consistency check is used to ensure that attributes such as nominal width and nominal pressure on the wiring section defined by the user through start- and end points are consistent. cadison.com is a website dedicated to the city of Madison, Wisconsin.
The average width of the tyre, in the lower region, equals the nominal width of the rim on which the tyre is placed, as indicated by the manufacturer in the descriptive note, increased by 20 mm for tyres defined by the ‘tyre to rim fitment configuration’ (see para. 3.1.10) symbol ‘A’ or ‘U’. http://eur-lex.europa.eu/
Cross section plots – variable section widths
The letters “LT” at the start or end of the tire size suggest that the tire was made for light trucks. Some light trucks have “LT” tires fitted by the manufacturer. In general, these tires need higher inflation pressures than passenger tires.
Is the width of the tire measured from sidewall to sidewall in millimeters. The tire width is indicated by the first three digits of the tire scale. The width of a size P215/65 R15 tire, for example, is 215 millimeters.
Is the ratio of the tire’s cross-section height to its width. The aspect ratio is the two-digit number after the slash mark in a tire scale. The 65 in a size P215/65 R15 tire, for example, indicates that the height is equal to 65 percent of the width. The higher the aspect ratio, the larger the sidewall of the rubber.
Uniform Tire Quality Grading is a classification system developed by the United States Department of Transportation to provide customers with information to assist them in making tire purchases based on treadwear, traction, and temperature capabilities.

The section width is the first set of numbers on your tire dimension. This is the tire’s diameter in millimeters. The tire segment width often ends in a 5 for passenger cars and trucks (185, 195, 205, etc.). It often ends in a zero (110, 130) for motorcycles, and in some extreme cases, the segment width is measured in inches rather than millimeters (5, 6, etc). Both metric (millimeters) and decimal (inches) sizes are available for trailer tires.
After the section width and slash, the aspect ratio is the next number. This figure represents the tire’s sidewall height from the rim to the tread. The higher the number, the higher the sidewall, and the lower the number, the lower the sidewall.
How and when to use content width section setting in
The amount of section width that occurs between the section height and section width of a tyre. The aspect ratio is 50 percent if the section height is half the section width. Main WORD: BALANCE
For smooth driving, the mass of the tyre and wheel assembly is distributed evenly. Weights are attached to the tire rim to compensate for the tyre or wheel’s uneven weight distribution. BEADING
The band of multiple tyre cords compressed and laid at opposite angles underneath the tread that determines the tyre’s diameter and stabilizes the tread by resisting deformation from cornering, braking, and centrifugal forces. These aren’t connected to the tyre beads. BIAS-PLY BIAS-PLY BIAS-PLY
Plies (usually rubberized fabric cords) that run diagonally from one bead to the next are used in this form of tyre construction. The first ply is biased in one direction, and the following plies are set alternately in opposite directions, crossing each other. It’s also classified as a cross-ply tyre. BLT stands for bacon, lettuce, and tomato.
