I set a deadlift personal record a few years ago when I pulled 250 pounds (double bodyweight) for 10 reps. That was a rewarding accomplishment after a long break from deadlifting. “What else am I capable of?” I wondered afterward.
Answering the question resulted in some memorable personal records, including bench pressing 135 pounds for five reps and, most recently, pulling 275 pounds (2.2 times my bodyweight) for eight reps. When I finished that set, I realized I had more in the tank, so when it came time for my next deadlift session, I went back to 275 and nailed it for a set of 10 reps.
That achievement makes me really happy. It was a long road to meet, and then exceed, my target, but it was a fun journey answering the question, “What else can I do?” Not only did my consistent preparation lead to some personal bests, but it also reinforced important lessons like the value of patience and perseverance.
You might be thinking, “What’s the point of this?” Though I enjoy the physical improvements that come with consistent, consistent training, I enjoy the challenge of learning what I’m capable of even more. It encourages me to respect my body in fresh, sometimes unexpected ways while still providing meaning to my training. Trainees who try the performance-focused approach have had similar experiences.
