Support/Employment Opportunities: Three-year teaching and graduate assistantships provide full funding for the program. Every student has the chance to teach composition and creative writing to others. Every assistantship comes with a full tuition waiver, health care, and a stipend of over $20,000 per year.

We look at your writing sample first and foremost, in addition to your personal statement, recommendation letters, CV or resume, and everything else you send us, since the MFA program takes a comprehensive approach to admissions. If your most recent degree program’s cumulative GPA is less than 3.0, please contact the MFA program director for more information.
For Creative Writing, three letters of recommendation are needed (M.F.A.). Professors, published authors, and those who can credibly determine their ability as creative writers should be included in MFA applications. To ensure that non-U.S. citizens or permanent residents enter the university with adequate English skills to work in a graduate program, the Graduate School allows all non-U.S. citizens or permanent residents to demonstrate English proficiency. The most common way international applicants demonstrate English proficiency is through a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Assessment System) test score. For entry, we need a minimum TOEFL score of 90 (IBT) or an IELTS score of 8. ETS institution code 5859 should be used to give us test results. Students enrolled in any English course who wish to print course-related assignments, create digital projects, or collaborate may use the Digital Studio. Students participating in ENGL 3764: Professional Writing will take advantage of additional resources such as online tutoring and on-site support for collaborative projects. We create online content to help Technical Writing students with assignments in this course, with a focus on practical, critical, and rhetorical skills.
Our team is made up of committed English department graduate and undergraduate students. Our interns are all majoring in Professional and Technical Writing and are hard at work developing content for this website and providing support.
Allison is a fourth-year PhD student in Virginia Tech’s Rhetoric and Writing program. Her dissertation investigates the intersection between academic writing and writing centers through a feasibility analysis.
Jessie is a graduate student in the department of English. Fantasy, children’s literature, and comic books are among her research interests. She aspires to receive her doctorate and work as a literature professor. She has a cat called Peach and is fascinated with Harry Potter.
