Using plex with vpn

Unable to access plex / media server & shared resources

You’ve probably heard that VPNs are needed for streaming and that Plex is one of the best services available. But did you know that you can use your VPN to access Plex from anywhere in the world? We demystify the procedure by demonstrating how simple it is (and the hard way, just for fun).
Plex is a robust media center service that allows you to stream movies from a dedicated storage medium to almost any screen. Have a TV show on your PC that you’d like to watch on Fire TV? Install Plex on both devices, then start streaming; it’s that simple.
Plex does, however, require some configuration to protect your online connection. You want to protect your privacy at all costs, which is why using a VPN to connect to Plex is always a good idea.
Plex with a VPN offers two important benefits: virtual IP addresses and data encryption. You can use the former to get around area limits on non-local streaming content. If a Plex Channel, for example, only serves users in a specific country, you can also use your VPN to connect to a server in that country, then launch the stream as if you were a local.

Fix plex media server remote access issues

My Plex server is located on a laptop in my home network. On that rig, I run Nord VPN with a P2P connection 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Radarr and Sonarr are both working, so they can capture, rename, and transfer files to the appropriate media directories for Plex use. omegle omegle omegle omegle
Maintaining this Nord VPN link wasn’t an issue with still accessing my Plex libraries through client software – for example, when I was away from home and using the Plex mobile app over LTE – until maybe the last couple weeks or so. When I wasn’t on my LAN, I could still load media into Plex whether I was linked to a VPN or not.
That seems to have changed now. I put it to the test, and when my Plex server computer is connected to the VPN, remote access is disabled. However, once I detach from the VPN, remote access is restored.
I’d appreciate it if someone could give me any advice or insight into why the sudden change occurred and/or if there are any solutions. I’d like to keep my VPN link active 24 hours a day, seven days a week for Radarr/Sonnarr, but I don’t want to have to manually disconnect the Plex server’s VPN every time I need remote access.

Netflix and Hulu are great because you can watch from anywhere, but you don’t have the file on your hard drive waiting to be played whenever you want. Plex is the best choice because it organizes your media and streams it to your computers.
However, not all content is available via Plex, since there is region-locked content from sites like BBC iPlayer, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and others. To access this content, you’ll need the best VPN for Plex.

Plex – how to port forward

I choose not to use Plex via a VPN. Plex’s protection system is about as strong as a VPN, but there are a few other things to remember. Plex would lose the ability to change the bitrate if VPN is used, and I will never share my VPN keys with someone else (which is normally higher on local connections than on remote ones).
Different users may have different needs. Some members of my family have access to my Plex media, but I do not share VPN keys with them. My secondary house is not set up to be connected to the main one (it could be done, but it would necessitate additional hardware), and its TV boxes depend on plex login to access the plex server in my main house.

Could you explain how to modify the parameter? Is it the most commonly used network interface? I tried adding the 2nd ethernet adaptor’s local IP address, but it didn’t work, and I couldn’t think of any other choices. I’m using a vpn service as a client, which I believe is the issue. In the meantime, I’ll do a few more searches for that parameter.
