I attempted to increase the RAM on an old Acer Aspire One ZG5 netbook. I went to www.crucial.com and ordered the ostensibly right module for my netbook, a 1Gb 200-Pin DDR2 SODIMM 128Mx64, PC2-5300, using their built-in tool. I followed these instructions step by step: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Acer+Aspire+One+ZG5+RAM+Replacement/3781/Acer+Aspire+One+ZG5+RAM+Replacement/3781/Acer+Aspire+One+ZG5+RAM+Replacement/
However, when I re-booted the netbook, it became clear that the machine was not recognizing all of the RAM I had installed, and the BIOS itself only registered 512Mb, not the full 1Gb that I had purchased. Upon further investigation, I believe I have ascertained that the Aspire One ZG5 netbook has an additional 512 Mb RAM module soldered to the motherboard.
If that’s the case, the extra RAM module will be absolutely invisible. To be honest, I don’t believe Crucial.com sent the wrong DDR2 module. What adjustments will still be required? The machine runs Ubuntu 13.04, but that shouldn’t be a concern because the BIOS is installed first.

The CPU platform defines a lot of the characteristics of a specific Acer Aspire One model. The Intel Atom processors were included in the first versions. Models with various AMD chips were later released. The Atom was also updated to a newer edition.
Early models used the Intel Atom platform, which includes the Intel Atom processor, Intel 945GSE Express chipset, which Intel 82801GBM (ICH7M) I/O controller, and came in a variety of shell colors, including seashell white, sapphire blue, golden brown, onyx black, and coral pink.
In June 2010, higher-end models with the AMD Athlon II Neo processor and ATI Radeon HD 4225 graphics controller were announced. Depending on the model, onyx black, antique brass, or mesh black shells are available. Acer aspire 1 (a114-32) – disassembly and upgrade options

I figured it wasn’t soldered to the motherboard because the specifications state it’s ram upgradeable, and it has a ram port, unlike my netbook, which doesn’t have one. Make sure you get laptop RAM rather than desktop RAM, as the two are different sizes and are not pin compatible.
Thanks ffg7 and Barty1884, sorry for the late reply, but I was busy disassembling my netbook. When I received the ram, I was surprised to discover that it was not soldered to the motherboard. The ram could be removed and replaced with a larger capacity. Since I didn’t have a DDR2 sdmm on hand, I had to order one. When I’m done, I’ll post the results.

The Acer Aspire One 722 comes with 2GB of RAM (sometimes 4GB), which is enough. But why should you be happy with a 4GB upgrade? While most people are aware that the RAM can be increased to 4GB, did you know that it can also be increased to 8GB?
I went with Corsair’s CMSO8GX3M1A1333C9 RAM because of its good feedback and affordable price. Memory that matches the requirements of other manufacturers should theoretically function as well.
The most important thing to remember about 8GB RAM is that it must be installed as a single 8GB module rather than two 4GB modules. This implies that all 8GB must be stored on a single memory module. Both cost about the same, and the dual module kit seems to be more common, so don’t buy the wrong one. There is only one SO-DIMM slot on the Aspire One 722. There is no connector for a second RAM slot in the netbook, despite the fact that there appears to be space for one below the RAM.
Memory upgrades in the netbook are simple and only take a minute or two. Remove the battery, then unscrew the single screw on the back panel and slip it off. The RAM module can be removed by spreading the memory tabs apart. Replace it with the 8GB module and gently push it into position before it clicks. Since the RAM module is keyed, there is no chance of installing it incorrectly.
