A new school of Mastery appeared well before Yurnero’s time, well before the Isle of Masks’ apex—one whose practitioners had learned to use their blades to pierce the very fabric of existence itself. However, these blade masters quickly learned that the consequences of their actions may have far-reaching consequences far beyond the battlefield. Fearing dire consequences—the essence of which we don’t know—the school’s elders burned every shred of parchment in their libraries before turning their blades on the school’s adherents…and then themselves.

What if the president and vice-president-elect both pass away before taking the oath of office? The response is far from clear, and the consequences will be nothing short of political instability. Cotton Malone, an ex-Justice Department agent, is shot down over Siberia and forced to fight for his life against Aleksandr Zorin, a man whose decades of allegiance to the former Soviet Union has turned into a deep hatred of the United States.
A conclave to choose the pope’s successor is about to start. Cardinals are starting to arrive at the Vatican, but one has already left for Malta in search of a fourth-century book. Cotton Malone, a former Justice Department operative, is on the hunt for letters between Winston Churchill and Benito Mussolini that went missing in 1945 and may rewrite history. I spent almost the whole day on Sunday trying to finish Steve Berry’s new Cotton Malone historical thriller. To be completely honest, I’m typically Berry’s biggest supporter. I still look forward to reading about the exploits of the least-retired, retired Magellan Billet recruit. The Malone series is known for its high-octane action, close calls, double crosses, and pure thrills. The Lost Order, on the other hand, was not one of my favorite Berry books. It’s all too tempting to forget the books right in front of you, the ones you see every day, no matter where you are. I’m surrounded by books in the library, and there’s just so much time to read. However, there are several books that are ubiquitous.

I wanted to give it a shot and purchased Steve Berry’s The Lost Order.
Part of a continuing series about Justice Department agent Cotton Malone (they always have such fun names) and his exploits in uncovering hidden schemes and conspiracies involving threats from all over history, often from the United States.
Despite being the 12th installment in the series, there isn’t much background information needed to understand what’s going on. It’s a self-contained story: A long-thought-to-be-destroyed historical covert group known as the Knights of the Golden Circle has reappeared with a deadly goal: to take over the United States and usurp control from the president. Cotton Malone discovers the plot and joins forces with the former president to stop the underground group from carrying out their scheme.
