The Atlanta Friends Meeting was established in 1943 and purchased a home on Fairview Road in the historic Druid Hills neighborhood in the late 1950s. The Meetinghouse was one of the few places in the city where interracial meetings and education could take place, in addition to serving as a meeting place for Friends. The Meeting relocated to a new facility near the Atlanta-Decatur border in 1990.
A committee of the Meeting established the Friends School of Atlanta, which was incorporated as a charitable organization in 1990. Waman French, an educator with experience at Brooklyn Friends School and Atlanta International School, was appointed the first Head of School by the Friends School of Atlanta’s Board of Trustees in 1991. Meeting members are active members of the school’s Board of Trustees and provide input and assistance in a variety of ways to the school.
The school opened in the fall of 1991 with 37 students, ages 412 to 8, and three teachers, occupying space in the newly built Friends Meetinghouse at West Howard and Adair Streets in Decatur.

Divide the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers to get the student/teacher ratio. Please bear in mind that a lower student-to-teacher ratio does not always mean a smaller class size. Schools occasionally employ part-time teachers, and some teachers are hired for specialized teaching with limited class sizes. The student-to-teacher ratio is influenced by these and other factors. Pre-Kindergarten may not be included in the student/teacher ratio in private schools.
