It’s always a good idea to thank anyone who has assisted you in your job search. Your gratitude will be accepted by the recipient, whether it’s in the form of a formal letter or a short email thank-you note. There are a few rules you can follow when writing thank-you letters or emails to an interviewer, someone who sent you a letter of recommendation, or a connection who provided you with career advice.
Arrangement: If you’re typing your thank-you note, make sure it’s single-spaced and that each paragraph is separated by a space. Use 1” margins and left-align your text (the alignment for most business documents). Use the basic instructions for writing thank-you letters to format your message.
Thank-you emails or handwritten letters: You can submit a thank-you email instead of writing a thank-you letter for a job interview if you know the company is making a swift hiring decision. You can, however, type or handwrite a thank-you letter and mail it if you have the time. If you must handwrite your note, use a standard thank-you card (nothing too silly or elaborate).
