OpenVPN was installed on both Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10. I have the same issue in both cases. I have an.ovpn and.crt file that I need to add to the vpn. I have a username and password combination as well. When I use those files to run OpenVPN (in admin/sudo mode), I get the following error: AUTHORITY: The control message AUTH FAILED was received.
My VPN provider had similar issues with me (ProXPN). Despite the fact that I was certain I was using the same user name and password that had successfully logged me into my account on their website, the VPN client kept reporting AUTH FAILED. My password turned out to be 12-characters long, which worked fine on the website. The VPN client linked and authenticated perfectly after I reduced the password to 8 characters!

Tonight, I was able to cut my OpenVPN link to around 20 servers. I was playing around with the client-connect scripts and one of them returned a non-zero answer at some stage. This non-zero answer resulted in a SIGTERM[soft,auth-failure] obtained, process exiting exit from the OpenVPN client, as well as an AUTH: Received AUTH FAILED control message in the syslog. Is there a way to safeguard myself against this? Is there any server-side or client-side configuration?
Wrapping the openvpn client in a while loop that restarts it is the safest way to shield yourself from this. According to the openvpn discussion list, this was a design decision since auth failures almost always necessitate manual intervention, and making the client retry will in many cases lock out the consumer (as per SOX/PCI protection precautions). It’s unclear what your OS configuration is, but in OS X, the launchd will take care of this.

Right, I’m using the express vpn-provided unique name and password, not my account name and password. My only guess right now is that I’m not placing the keys in the right place; they’re actually in /etc/openvpn because I’m not sure where else they’d go.
For reference, the keys/certs were included in the ovpn files I last downloaded from ExpressVPN (around a year ago – my account is no longer active, so I can’t check), so there was no need to place them somewhere else on the computer (not like setting up a client). So, try installing a new ovpn from your account and simply changing the auth-user-pass line to point to your credentials file.
Thank you, @VincentR, thank you for your comment. The keys and certificates are also in my ovpn file; I just tried placing them in a separate file, but that didn’t work either; the separate file also gave me an unknown choice error. I’ll reinstall and double-check the settings.

Following a thorough analysis of iptables, I have tightened up the rules to avoid tracker announce request IP leakage under some circumstances. With the fix in place, a new image has been rolled out for all vpn powered docker images I generate (25th Feb 2021). I would urge everyone to upgrade to the newly produced ‘latest’ tagged image.

Since switching to wireguard, I still can’t reach the webgui outside of my LAN. For my most recent restart of the container, I’ve added the most recent logs. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. I double-checked Q2 and Q4 and assume they are right. I’m not sure what I’m lacking.
So, due to a technical problem with my work machine, I had to switch my ISP gateway to bridge mode and back, and it appears that I’ve broken a couple of my dockers, including Deluge and nzbgevpn. I can no longer access those dockers because the page says This site can’t be reached, declined to link when I click on WebUI. I attempted to change the openvpn end points for Deluge, but it was unsuccessful. Then I lost Docker service, which I restored, but I’m still unable to open Deluge or Nzb.
