The bestselling author of Last Day returns with a chilling thriller about one wife’s willingness to go to any length to reveal the truth—and the lengths to which someone would go to stop her.
Claire Beaudry Chase is unsure who she can trust after being assaulted and left for dead in her home on the Connecticut coast. Her prime suspect, however, is her well-connected husband, Griffin, who is running for governor. Claire was planning an exhibit of her shadow boxes just before the attack, one of which specifically accuses Griffin of a violent crime committed twenty-five years ago. His political career will be over if the public found out who her husband is. Claire is persuaded that her husband and his influential allies will murder her in order to prevent the truth from being exposed. Authorities believe the homicide of one of Claire’s friends is related to the assault on Claire. Claire must determine how much she’s willing to sacrifice to bring down her husband and the greedy group of insiders who will do anything to protect Griffin’s and their own interests as the two investigations unfold.

Years ago, Beth Lathrop and her sister Kate experienced what they believed to be the worst tragedy of their lives when their mother and the famous painting Moonlight were both stolen. Conor Reid, the detective assigned to the case, swore to protect the sisters from that point forward. Beth went on, completely immersing herself in the art world, managing the family gallery and raising a lovely daughter with her husband Pete. Kate, on the other hand, withdrew into herself and became a pilot, still on the fly.

Luanne Rice’s story The Shadow Box is engrossing. The author’s abilities should come as no surprise. This is the second book in the series, and there are plenty of subplots and suspects to keep readers guessing. She throws in a twist and turns, introducing other people of interest, just as you think you’ve found out who the antagonist is.
Claire Beaudry Chase, a Shadow Box artist, believes she has died when the book begins. In fact, she was extremely fortunate that the beam she was dangling from broke, allowing her to crash to the ground. She discovers she has been strangled and left for dead by a masked man after waking up. She decides to hide until she recovers from her wounds, believing it was her strong Connecticut state’s attorney husband Griffin, who is now running for Governor. She is scared and isolated, unable to contact the police because she does not know who is loyal to him. She knows the assault is related to her knowledge of a 25-year-old crime that, if made public, would jeopardize his election chances, as well as the fact that she left a shadow box representing the crime on display. Conor Reid, a state police detective, is assigned to the investigation of Claire’s disappearance. He suspects the two events are related after learning that an accident on the boat of the Chases’ neighbors, Sallie and Don Benson, happened on the same day she went missing. As detectives Conor and Jen Miano, as well as Coast Guard Tom Reid, race to find out who is responsible, the suspense grows.
