The Lorax (also known as Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax) is a musical fantasy film released by Illumination Entertainment in 2012, based on Dr. Seuss’ children’s book of the same name. Universal Pictures released the film on March 2, 2012, which would have been Dr. Seuss’s 108th birthday.
The film expands on the story of the Lorax and Ted, the previously unknown boy who visits the Once-ler, and is the second adaptation of the book (following the 1972 animated television special). The Lorax is played by Danny DeVito, the Once-ler is played by Ed Helms, and Ted is played by Zac Efron. Audrey, Ted’s love interest (voiced by Taylor Swift), Aloysius O’Hare, an evil air baron (voiced by Rob Riggle), Mrs. Wiggins, Ted’s mother (voiced by Jenny Slate), and Grammy Norma, Ted’s grandmother are among the new characters introduced in the film (voiced by Betty White). (5) Critics gave the film mixed reviews, but it made $348.8 million worldwide on a $70 million budget. [number four]
The film starts with Ted Wiggins, a 12-year-old boy who lives in Thneedville, a walled city with no natural vegetation or plant life. Ted has a thing for Audrey, so he tries to please her by bringing her a “real tree.” Norma, his grandma, tells him about the legend of the Once-ler, who is the only one who knows what happened to the trees. Ted learns that the outside world is a barren, polluted wasteland as he leaves Thneedville in search of the Once-ler. He tracks down the Once-ler, who promises to tell him the tale of the trees over the course of several visits. Ted runs into Thneedville’s selfish mayor Aloysius O’Hare, whose company sells bottled oxygen to the filthy city the next time he leaves home. O’Hare pressures Ted to remain in town, explaining that trees and the free oxygen they provide are a threat to his market, but Ted continues to visit the Once-ler.

Did you know that Dr. Seuss’ birthday is today? Today would have been Dr. Seuss’s 107th birthday. Dr. Seuss’ books were always a favorite of mine as a child, and I still enjoy reading them now. I’d like to share a fun Dr. Seuss online activity to commemorate his birthday.
The Seussville Playground has fun online games for kids to play as well as offline printable tools. The games and printable tools are themed to go along with different Dr. Seuss books. The “I Did Something Nice” certificate produced with a Horton Hears a Who theme is one of the printable tools that I think will be fun for K-2 teachers. The Seussville Story Maker is another online activity in the Seussville Playground that lets kids write a Dr. Seuss-style story.
