How to set up blocks

When it comes to achieving reliable, precise performance, power tools are invaluable. However, in order to achieve those results, every power tool needs some form of setup. Often, all you need is a square and a ruler. When setting up materials, pieces, and blades, however, it’s easy to misread a ruler. I use almost foolproof machinist’s set-up blocks to get around these issues.
Set-up blocks are precision blocks that are typically made of brass or aluminum to avoid cutting edges from being destroyed. A collection usually consists of five different sized blocks (1/8 inch, 1/4 inch, 1/8 inch, 1/8 inch, 1/8 inch, 1/8 inch, 1/8 inch, 1/8 inch, 1/8 inch, 1/8 inch, 1/8 inch “3/16″, 1/4″, 3/8″, and 1/2”), to name a few. You can combine two or more blocks to create any size you like. The benefit of using set-up blocks is that there is no need to calculate something. You simply use them as distance gauges and to set up bits, blades, fences, and other materials.
Set-up blocks are particularly useful when operating in a small space or in an obstructed region. Set-up blocks are a must-have if you have a job that needs precise setups even in an accessible environment.

Three vinyl shims (two 0.5mm thick and one 1mm thick), 2mm, 4mm, 8mm, and 16mm thick aluminium blocks (a second 16mm thick block is included to simplify 32mm spacing), and a 25mm x 50mm x 75mm steel block are included in this nine-piece collection. The shims and aluminum blocks are 50mm long and accurate to 0.05mm; the steel block is accurate to 0.018mm. The package makes stacking in 0.5mm increments from 0.5mm to 123mm. The bits are protected by dividers in a hard-shell plastic case. This product is manufactured in Canada.

Veritas set-up blocks

This isn’t a new technique; it’s just one that’s more common in metalworking than in woodworking. Gauge blocks are what machinists term them, and they’ve been around for decades. When you start using your setup blocks, you’ll note that they perform better in more places than guidelines or tapes. To achieve larger dimensions, you’ll start piling them on top of (or next to) each other. This is especially useful with the set’s largest block, which is precisely 1″ x 2″ x 4″. Require a 2-1/4” rip fence for cabinet rails and stiles? Adjust the fence until the combination just barely kisses the saw blade, then take the big block and the quarter inch block and snug them together. Without having to think about being on the correct mark on your law or if your tape is square to the fence, you can set the perfect fence.
Carefully crafted to last for generations. For dimension, flatness, and squareness, all of the blocks are machined to a 1/1000th of an inch tolerance. With the most reliable measuring system you have, verify any combination you like. You’ll find that a stack of these blocks is just as accurate as your best law and much more easy to work with.
