Serif drawplus x6 tutorial – pen and pencil drawing

This Serif DrawPlus tutorial will teach you how to turn a picture into a painting. In this exercise, we’ll focus on transforming a photograph into an avatar. This technique, on the other hand, can be used on any picture of any subject, whether the goal is a caricature, a digital vector drawing, or a basis for a cartoon.
Serif DrawPlus X3 comes with the excellent AutoTrace studio, which does an excellent job of transforming a picture into vector art, but what if you still have an older version of DrawPlus? What if you’re using DrawPlus X3 and you’re not pleased with the results? Any edition of Serif DrawPlus with layers will work best for this tutorial. I’ll keep it easy for now, but depending on the results we want, the project could become more involved and complex.
The photo is where we start with our avatar. Avatars are typically square: 100 pixels by 100 pixels, often slightly smaller, sometimes slightly bigger, but always square in shape. We cropped our picture to these square proportions after taking it. It doesn’t matter what size our picture is, but it helps if the photo is as big as possible because this will give us the information we need once we start drawing; the most important aspect of the photo at this point is composition. More than the head and part of the shoulders is unnecessary. Avatars’ heads are also larger than the rest of their bodies, so we want the head to take up roughly half of our picture, with the neck and shoulders taking up the other half. These measurements will be adjusted later in the drawing process. A word of caution: do not use the original picture for image cropping; instead, use a copy. First, I used Serif PhotoPlus to prepare my photo.

a brief introduction

Serif drawplus x6/x8 tutorial – pen and pencil drawing

The Pen tool in Serif DrawPlus is the focus of this tutorial. It continues on from the introductory tutorial “Bitmaps and Vectors” – if you haven’t read it yet, you can do so before proceeding, as it lays the groundwork for what’s to come.
This tutorial is subjective since it is based in part on personal preference and working style. It may not be for all, but it may provide a new way to create images in DrawPlus for others. Since drawing is such an important aspect of DrawPlus, something that makes it easier to understand and do, whether it’s tracing around an outline or starting from scratch, can only be a positive thing. This is based on the pen tool in DrawPlus, but the rules apply to the pen tool in Serif PhotoPlus as well (and any vector based tool in image creating software). This is also the method taught when constructing vector lines in other programs if you have the luxury or ability to attend some computer aided drawing course.
