Set up private internet access vpn on linux easily

From one of my headless CentOS 7 servers, I wanted to connect to my VPN service, Private Internet Access (PIA). Unfortunately, PIA software includes a graphical user interface to operate. Fortunately, PIA offers ovpn files that are completely compliant with openVPN’s headless mode.
Manually run the script to test it (make sure both your pia service and transmission services are already running.) I’ve found that the script would report performance even if it fails, which is why I recommend using bash -x to see the real PIA port forwarding error messages:

Note: In 2019, PIA merged with Kape Technologies, which sparked a lot of discussion, especially on Reddit. However, the following changes to the PIA infrastructure have been made since the merger:
PIA provides OpenVPN configuration files. Extract the ZIP file to a location that will be remembered for future access, such as your user home directory. It’s worth noting that, despite the fact that WireGuard is supported on both the Linux binary and the software, PIA has yet to provide WireGuard configuration files. In other words, by using the NetworkManager technique, only OpenVPN can be used.

17th of May, 2016 – It doesn’t happen too often, but when it does, it’s still fun to see. Thanks to Lucas Nell (on April 26 – my fault) for removing one more phase from the process with the script below. Simply substitute “[put-your-password-here]” with your actual password (no brackets), chmod +x some name.script to make it official, and you’re ready to make the additional mod.
If you sign up for a Private Internet Access account (and this can also apply to other VPN providers) and click on the only popular Ubuntu connection (12.04) in the Support Section (, you’ll be taken to a fairly easy 9-step method that walks you through the OpenVPN setup – from the install script down (that radial wifi icon or arrows in the upper-right corner).
When you try this in Ubuntu 14.04, it looks and works pretty much the same. However, nothing happens when you try to bind to a PIA-point in the Network Manager. Your wifi radial makes no adjustments, pulses, or provides some other hint that something is wrong. More significantly (at least according to the lack of feedback), you are not prompted to enter your PIA password (having put in your username in the install process). The absence of a password request turns out to be the real deal-breaker (and diagnostic for the fix presented down below).
