How to control kodi with alexa tutorial

My Pi is running Kodi, and my videos are stored on a USB-connected external hard drive. Since the Pi has an Ethernet link, it can be accessed through my internal network, which means I can browse files on my PC and monitor it through an iPhone app…
Here’s a solution I use and it works well. My hard drive is on an RP3 and I’m using OpenMediaVault to protect it (a NAS software that turns the Pi into a NAS). On my second Pi3, I have a second OSMC/Kodi installation. On my OpenMediaVault, I share my drive with SMB, and Kodi can access it via Wifi/LAN.
Log in to the Raspberry Pi. Run ifconfig and write down your local IPv4 address and default gateway address; they will most likely be in the format 192.168.X.X or 10.1.X.X, but it doesn’t matter.
In a browser window, go to the default gateway address; you can do this from any device on your network. Look for the port forwarding portion, which is also known as application forwarding. Knowing the make/model of your router (located on the bottom sticker) will help you find a short youtube tutorial to guide you through the process.

Will you elaborate on point #2? Since I didn’t see it in the setup guides, I’m thinking that’s it. I’m not sure what port I’m going to use. I just allowed it, but I’m not sure how to set it up on the Kodi side. Is it necessary for me to set up port forwarding on my router as well?
I already have Kodi open on my external hard drive, so I can use the Alexa skill for Kodi. That ability only works if you have Kodi open externally, as far as I know. I’ve discovered that being able to access my media from a distance appeals to me. Is Kodi vulnerable even when password protection is enabled? What am I in danger of? There is no physical media attached, and all media is created by Emby, which is not accessible from the outside.
There was no search on the Event Server. I tested it, but I can’t verify it right now because I’m restoring from a backup in Kodi. Since I have Logout set as my screensaver, I’d like this feature to be able to function remotely.

Why are we using SSH at all if it can be insecure? We should simply forward ports to Kodi… But I wouldn’t want to risk revealing it to the internet directly. There are millions of successful implementations of OpenSSH. It’s been through more battles than Kodi ever could. I have confidence in it.
Almost all will be wired to the internet via a NAT router. These divide a public IP address into a private IP subnetwork. One unintended consequence is that computers on the outside are unable to communicate directly with computers on the inside. When we try to log in with SSH, we need to tell the router where to send our link.
Every router has a slightly different operation, but if you don’t know what you’re doing, portforward.com has a guide for almost every router. We just need to forward a port for whatever port you allocated to your SSH server during the hardening phase.
You can now use your SSH port to connect to your public IP from outside the network. Most consumer routers, on the other hand, would not support port forwarding from inside the internal network. To test it, you’ll need a different link, or you can use an online port tester to probe your SSH port.
