The best of the internet (2019)
Instant communication through the Internet encourages the spread of word of mouth, resulting in fads and experiences that spread quickly. Planking (lying down in public places) is an example of such a fad; sharing a picture of someone planking online draws attention to the fad and causes it to reach a large number of people in a short amount of time. Memes’ rapid development is also aided by the internet. Many modern memes have surreal, nonsensical, and non-sequitur themes, and “dank” memes have emerged as a new type of image-macros.
The words meme and Internet meme have recently become umbrella terms referring to any piece of quickly-consumed humorous or relatable content that is built in the format of true Internet memes but is not intended to spread or grow, and have recently become umbrella terms referring to any piece of quickly-consumed comedic or relatable content that is designed in the format of true Internet memes but is not intended to spread or evolve. What constitutes a meme varies by Internet community and is subject to change over time: originally, memes consisted of a mixture of image macros and a concept or catchphrase, however the concept has since evolved to involve more complex constructs such as competitions, GIFs, images, and viral sensations.

We obtained responses from 1,204,252,411 sites with 263,042,054 unique domains and 10,766,606 web-facing computers in the February 2021 survey. There were 6,270,052 new pages, 92,829 new domains, and 116,789 new computers.
When it comes to the total number of pages, specific domains, and web-facing machines, nginx is at the top of the list. Nginx is used by 34.5 percent of all websites, 30.4 percent of domains, and 35.0 percent of web-facing computers. With a 26.3 percent market share of pages, a similar 26.4 percent share of domains, and 32.7 percent of web-facing computers, Apache is ranked second in these metrics.
OpenResty and Cloudflare are the third and fourth largest domain registrars, accounting for 14.4% and 7.1 percent of the market, respectively. OpenResty is a web application server based on nginx technology, but it is not a nginx fork in the strictest sense. Cloudflare’s server stack used to be based on nginx, but as time went on, they started to use more in-house built technologies. These web server vendors are now being monitored separately in the monthly Web Server Survey charts as of this month.

Email has been around since the 1960s, file sharing since at least the 1970s, and TCP/IP was standardized in 1982, so the Internet has a long history. However, it was the advent of the World Wide Web in 1989 that changed the direction of our communication history. The world wide web was founded by Tim Berners-Lee, an English scientist who devised a method for sharing knowledge over a network of computers. He was working for CERN, the European physics laboratory in the Swiss Alps, at the time.
The graph begins in 1990, one year before Berners-Lee launched the first web browser and one year before the first website went live (the site of CERN, which is still online). Only a fraction of the world’s computers were linked to the internet at the time; figures from 1990 indicate that only half of one percent of the world’s population was online.
As seen in the graph, this began to change in the 1990s, at least in certain parts of the world: by the year 2000, nearly half of the population in the United States was using the internet to access information. However, the internet has yet to have a significant impact in most parts of the world; in 2000, 93 percent of people in East Asia and the Pacific, and 99 percent of people in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa were still offline. Less than 7% of the world’s population was online at the time of the Dot-com crash.

Legislators in California and Massachusetts are debating eliminating natural gas in new local building standards in order to minimize greenhouse gas pollution and find more sustainable heating and cooling solutions. New York lawmakers are considering similar legislation.
It’s a necessary step in the fight against climate change. Natural gas comes in second to coal in terms of gross carbon dioxide emissions from electricity production, according to the US Energy Information Administration. It contributes 33 percent of total carbon dioxide emissions from electricity as a fossil fuel.
The movement toward all-electric or Net Zero Energy homes has gained traction as a more sustainable alternative. Homeowners who want to significantly minimize or remove all greenhouse gas emissions from their heating and cooling systems are gradually moving to modern air-to-water heat pump systems. These systems, which operate on renewable energy sources, generate hot water for heating and chilled water for cooling.
