A distributed search engine is one that does not have a central server. Work such as crawling, data mining, indexing, and query processing is distributed among many peers in a decentralized manner, with no single point of control, unlike conventional centralized search engines.

I’d been using MX Linux for a while when I came across a cool peer-to-peer distributed search engine that I built on a Windows laptop. I wondered if this will install and run from my Live MX Linux flash drive after running the search engine (Yacy: https://yacy.net/) for a while.
I should also note that Yacy is a Web Crawler, not just a passive search engine, so it doesn’t really shine as a useful tool until you let it crawl some of your favorite websites and places of personal interest on the internet.
If persistence is allowed and the session is saved, pages that you crawl are indexed locally and stored on the MX flash drive. As a result, the search index grows over time, increasing the relevancy of search results.
For about a month, I ran Yacy on an MX Linux USB drive, but I also used the laptop, which was MS Windows 7, on which I had a Windows version of Yacy running at times, among other things. I was checking this on an old junky “sacrificial” device, so it wasn’t a big deal when it crashed. I had left the Yacy server running unattended overnight, and when I woke up the next morning, the machine was toast. It still booted, but Windows was evidently tainted with something, and the copy of MX Linux on the flah drive was corrupted as well.

Sonar is a research and development project for a decentralized search toolkit. The majority of open-source search engines are currently designed to operate on centralized infrastructure. When operating in a decentralized environment, this becomes an issue. Sonar would attempt to resolve some of these issues by enabling search engines to exchange their indexes incrementally over a peer-to-peer network. Sonar would thus serve as a basis for incorporating full-text search into peer-to-peer/decentralized applications. Sonar will initially concentrate on integrating with a peer-to-peer network (Dat) in order to securely expose search indexes in a decentralized structure. Sonar will provide a library for creating, sharing, and querying search indexes. Integration with the peer-to-peer archiving tool Archipel can have a user interface and content ingestion pipeline.
The internet’s most common and basic use cases are search and discovery. When you’re in school and need to give a presentation or write a report, when you’re searching for a job, trying to promote your company, or looking for relevant commercial or public services, you’ll almost always turn to the internet and, more importantly, your browser’s search bar to find answers. Users need to be able to search for information to ensure that their name, organization, or concept can be found, but they have little control over this. What results you see, how your website is found, and what information is logged about your searches are all determined by search engines. Users have no idea what filters and algorithms are being used. They can only obey the rules that have been set out for them, rather than choosing for themselves what, when, and how they can find the knowledge they need.
