How to setup a vpn server on your home router using dd
My client wants to create a web server that will be available over the Internet. The webserver would need to communicate with the LAN’s Domain Controller and SQL Server on a dedicated server, and we’d like to keep this remote server linked to the LAN via VPN all of the time. The client actually uses a NetGear R7000 Nighthawk router. A Site-to-Site VPN is included with the remote cloud host. Unfortunately, since the remote host side is done by a different provider than my MSP company, that’s all I know about it. (The remote server is being managed by a reputed SQL whiz.) Can anyone comment on whether the NetGear R7000 will be up to the challenge I’m proposing here based on what I’ve written here?
Okay, I’m almost able to call it a day on this one. Here’s what I had in mind: Create a site-to-site VPN from our NetGear R7000 router to our vendor’s “Performance Cloud” (which, as far as I can tell, does not exist)! IPsec / IKE v2 VPN is needed (according to “Performance Cloud”). The following is the details that the vendor sent me to use in configuring the VPN:

The Remote WAN IP address must be entered in the second stage. In the textbox, type the MX protection appliance’s public IP address. Please note that this must be the primary interface’s IP address as defined on the MX under Security & SD-WAN > Configure > SD-WAN & traffic shaping > Uplink range > Global preferences > Primary uplink. As a consequence, if your primary uplink is set to WAN 1, you must use WAN 1’s Public IP address.
In the third stage, you’ll be instructed to access the remote LAN subnet. Enter the MX protection appliance’s VPN-shared subnet in the IP Address text boxes. Enter the numbers that correspond to the LAN subnet’s CIDR notation in the text box called subnet mask. A /24 will be entered as 255.255.255.0, for example. To proceed to the next screen, press the Next button.
A rundown of the previous three measures will be shown on the final screen. To enforce the policy, double-check your answers and press the Finished button. To customize the VPN tunnel’s authentication and encryption parameters, the Netgear Prosafe uses default settings recommended by the VPNC (VPN Consortium). The MX series will function with these defaults; no additional configuration is needed. When client traffic tries to reach the remote subnet with the settings saved to the Netgear Prosafe, it will attempt to create an IPsec VPN tunnel with the MX.

There are two types of VPN connections that Azure supports.

Site-to-site connects your internal network to an Azure VLAN, resulting in a single routable network.

Point-to-site connectivity connects a single computer to an Azure VLAN, essentially placing it behind the Azure firewall. A high-level explanation of this can be found in the previous blog. In a previous article, I also showed how to build a point-to-site.
I decided to link my home office network to Azure so that I could access all of my IaaS machines from the back end.
All of these devices are on a VLAN (10.0.2.x) with ACLs that prevent external port access.
My home office has a single public IP and a VPN-capable Netgear FVS318N firewall installed behind my cable modem. I don’t have a nested network that’s confusing. Behind the Netgear, the office is a 192.168.1.x network with NAT enabled. A Windows RRAS server with several LAN cards is recommended in some Microsoft papers. The CableModem/DSL adapter is connected to one LAN card, while the internal network is connected to the other. I’m a huge fan of low-power, low-cost appliances, and my front door even has a NetGear VPN router.

The Insight Managed Business Router (BR200) from NETGEAR allows small businesses and remote and branch office (ROBO) installations to provide safe access to an office intranet through a secure site-to-site Virtual Private Network (IPSec VPN).
It is important for remote employees to have quick and safe access to company network services. Remote workers can safely access data on their office network with the new NETGEAR Insight Controlled Business Router (BR200). They simply need a BR200 in their home or remote office to connect to another BR200 in the main office. This new router makes it easier than ever for employees to share IT resources between two offices, such as fileservers, network-attached storage, and other mission-critical properties.
The Insight Managed Business Router (BR200) is designed to help businesses protect their networks with a safe site-to-site VPN and firewall through the Insight Cloud Portal or mobile app. It includes simple configuration, firewall, VLAN management, and remote cloud monitoring and management from anywhere. The Insight Cloud allows you to see real-time VPN link and security status of connected devices, as well as monitor all of your security features and control your router remotely.
