To go along with my gigabit internet, I recently upgraded to the Nighthawk AC1900 (R7000). I can consistently pull 900+ Mbps wired from WAN to LAN through the router through speedtest.net, but I can only get up to 40 Mbps with the speedtest app from my phone (pixel xl with connection speed of 866 mbps) on the 5Ghz… Does anyone have any ideas? I also connected my old Ubiquity AP and it’s capped at 40 Mbps via my phone (I also tried it with my wife’s Nexus 6p and got the same results). I used to be able to get 200+Mbps from that AP. This leads me to assume there is some QoS going on on the router, but QoS is disabled, so it wouldn’t impact the other AP. The only thing that comes to mind right now is that the signals might be congested, so I’m going to scan next. I’ve tried channels 153, 157, and 161, but all of them produce the same results. Q: My Netgear Nighthawk R7000 router’s speed has steadily deteriorated over the course of my less than two-year ownership, with each firmware protection update. One wireless PC that was capable of approximately 100 megabits per second has been reduced to 40 megabits per second. Another PC connected directly to the router receives around the same slow speed after previously reaching up to 200 mbps. Comcast delivers their expected 300 mbps speed when I temporarily link one PC directly to my Arris DOCSIS 3.0 modem! In reality, I have the same Netgear router as you do, and the output of my router has remained consistent. Yes, connecting your device directly to the Ethernet port on your cable modem would provide substantially faster performance than using a Wi-Fi router to access the modem. However, some cable modems do not have firewall security for the Ethernet port, in addition to requiring a cable connection to the modem. There are configuration settings in the Wi-Fi router that you may adjust to theoretically boost performance, but depending on what devices you’re using and how they’re configured, changing settings can actually cause performance to suffer. However, there are a few things I think you should do. First, try changing the antennas on the router (if you haven’t already).

Our R7000 router, like many others, has been experiencing poor internet download speeds. These sluggish speeds occur when we link to the router via cable with the wifi turned off on both the device and the router, or when we connect to the router via wifi – it makes no difference. Our internet access is the Ultimate bundle, with download/upload speeds of 300Mbps/30Mbps. We were fortunate to get 120-160Mbps download when connecting via the router, but only 30Mbps up. We typically get our rated download speed and above when connecting directly via the cable modem (Motorola MB8600).
We turned it off, connected the computer to the router and the router to the modem, let the modem boot up fully, then let the router boot up completely, then let the computer boot up completely after making sure everything else was fine. After ensuring that all unnecessary procedures were terminated, new speed tests were performed, revealing slow download speeds of 120-160 Mbps. Several tests connected to the router during the past month, whether by direct cable with wifi turned off on the device and router, or by wifi, regularly showed slower speeds from the ISP’s speed test and various internet speed test sites. Moreover, several experiments conducted when bypassing the router and connecting directly to the modem consistently yielded results of 300-350. So the router was unquestionably the source of the problem.

When using aftermarket firmware on the R7000, such as DDWRT, it will use CPU-only NAT control with a maximum throughput of about 300mbps. If you use factory firmware, however, it should have hardware NAT and be able to reach gigabit speeds.
What modem do you have? When I upgraded to gigabit internet with Comcast, I had the same problem. My download and upload speeds were limited to 300 megabits per second. Despite the fact that my tplink modem is capable of gigabit speeds, comcast only had firmware for it that limited it to 300mbps. This was a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, and the firmware on it was dictated by Comcast. They force it on you automatically, and you have no control over it. To solve my problem, I purchased a Motorola MB8600 Docsis 3.1 modem.
