Mr. Robot’s second season has been, let’s face it, a little meandering at times. (We criticize because we adore each other.) This week’s show, however, made up for it all with a burst of big plot twists and some truly spectacular filmmaking from creator/director Sam Esmail. It is, without a doubt, the most rewarding episode of the season so far.
We resumed last week’s story with Joanna confronting Elliot/”Ollie” on the driveway. Back in her opulent flat, Joanna locked her gaze on Elliot’s soul (Elliot, to us: “I really feel like she can hear us”) before pleading with him to assist her in finding Tyrell. Elliot, of course, believes he killed Tyrell — but I’m not sure we can trust him on that — so he played along to keep her from suspecting him. Because, after all, Joanna is a terrifying woman.
For example, she told Elliot about her first date with Tyrell and how cute it was. He seduced the woman to get the earrings for Joanna after she saw some she liked on a beautiful woman. (She also has them: “These are my cheapest possessions.”) Nonetheless, they’re my favorites.”) All of this was to show Elliot how far Tyrell was willing to go for her… and how far she was willing to go for him.

Tyrell is Elliot’s father, but he is younger than the Christian Slater version, as he was when he worked at Evil Corps. Joanna speaks about raising a girl and giving her up for adoption while still sharing her love for her newborn son. This may be a nod to Darlene’s absence from Elliot’s childhood flashbacks. She also resembles Elliot’s controlling mother. She seems to recognize Elliot when they speak, and she seems to be aware of Elliot’s mental illness, similar to Elliot’s mother in the Time Square finale. Is Tyrell a different version of Mr. Robot? It’s possible. Another perspective is that they are both true people, just another married couple reliving Elliot’s childhood memories.

Season 3 of Mr. Robot may have been the show’s most unconventionally built season yet. Seasons 1 and 2 see the action ramp up and up and up and up and up and up and up and up and up and up and up and up and up and up and Season 2 had a good sense of escalation, considering its flaws.
One of the most satisfying Easter Eggs in the underappreciated season 2 finale is that the word, “Python,” didn’t apply to the coding language, but to actual pythons, as it was the FBI’s “slowly binding everyone in” strategy. Season 2 was like that slow-binding python for the whole season.
Season 3’s storyline and multiple climaxes, on the other hand, inhabit a near-perfect parabola. The season starts off slowly, wrapping up the loose ends that season 2 didn’t bother with, before reaching glorious, exciting series highs for 3-4 episodes before reverting to Mr. Robot replacement-level results.
Season 3 isn’t terrible by any means. Season 3 is, in reality, the best season of the entire show so far. I accept that the Internet has been riddled with stories and tweets about a resurgent Mr. Robot this week. By almost every metric, this was a fun, exciting season of television, and a return to form for a show that, depending on who you ask, may or may not have needed it.
