In third grade, I preached the gospel of the wild boar for two weeks. Mrs. DeWilde, my vivacious instructor, set an open-ended research project for my class: create a five-minute presentation on any exotic species. Before bedtime, I spent my free time recording a 20-minute sermon about the Sus scrofa’s wonders. I made a poster the size of my 9-year-old self, complete with photos, facts, and maps, as well as a fold-out snout diagram. I read a five-stanza rhyming poem about the swine’s life cycle, painted the species’ desert and taiga environments in vivid detail, and gave uncanny snorting impressions during my presentation. I approached each new project that year with the same zeal — a sketch of the water cycle, a history of the Powhatan —
Back to the fall of my senior year of high school, I was hunched over at a Wendy’s booth, chocolate Frosty in one hand, copying calculus worksheets from Jimmy and Spanish homework from Chris with the other, as they copied my notes on Medea or Jane Eyre. Here’s what I had my students do as a final assessment and to follow some additional Common Core Informational Reading Standards.
The students were tasked with creating their own mini-magazine on a subject of their choosing.
Some of our analysis and reasoning principles, as well as a few writing standards, were also addressed.
I decided to devote several days to this because I believe that if students can effectively Compose each form of text structure, they would be better able to recognize and understand the purpose of different text structures.
The students had to really think about which subtopics would work well with and form of text structure, which is exactly what I was looking for.
If you don’t have a few days of class time to commit to it, this would be a perfect at-home project.
