A landline telephone (also known as a landline, land-line, main line, home phone, landline, fixed-line, and wireline) is a phone that transmits data over a metal wire or optical fiber telephone line, as opposed to a mobile cellular line, which transmits data over radio waves.

According to the CIA World Factbook, there were approximately 1.263 billion main telephone lines in use around the world in 2003. China had the most people with 350 million, followed by the United States with 268 million. There were 23.7 million fixed home phones in the United Kingdom. [three]
According to 2013 figures, the total number of fixed-telephone subscribers worldwide was about 1.26 billion.
[number four] Owing to advancements in digital technology and the conveniences that come with switching to wireless (cellular) or Internet-based alternatives, the number of landline subscribers continues to decline.
A fixed phone line (not a cell phone line) may be hard-wired or cordless, which refers to the operation of wireless devices or networks in fixed locations such as homes. Fixed wireless devices are generally powered by utility mains electricity, as opposed to handheld or portable wireless devices, which are typically battery-powered. While mobile and portable systems can be used in fixed locations, they have lower performance and bandwidth than fixed systems. In the event of a power outage or natural disaster, smartphone or portable battery-powered wireless devices may be used as emergency backups for fixed systems.

Is it impossible to substitute a telephone jack that already exists? Is it appropriate to switch off the power to replace it? -Sylvia adverbial adverbial Hello, Sylvia. It’s not difficult to replace a phone jack; all you have to do is move the color-coded wires from the old jack to the corresponding terminals on the new one. Although telephone lines do carry 48 volts of electricity, it is rarely enough to cause a shock, but it can interfere with a pacemaker.
When the phone rings, the voltage in the line surges to about 90 volts, which can cause a slight shock. To avoid this, unplug the modular jack at the telephone interface box where the line enters your home and make sure the phone is dead before attempting to repair it. Another alternative is to delete a second phone from the hook so that it does not ring. Since phone lines have their own source of energy, they remain energized even when the power is switched off, so resetting your house’s breaker would have little impact. In addition, never operate on the phone line during a thunderstorm because lightning can strike the wire and cause serious injury. How to get 5v from phone line/ land line
When the issue of VoIP vs. POTS comes up, one of the most common reasons in favor of having at least one POTS line is that a simple phone does not need AC power. It gets its electricity from the phone company over the same POTS network, so it should be able to keep going in the event of a power failure. This is on the verge of becoming a legend.
The definition is not incorrect in and of itself. On your POTS line, you might have a really simple phone that will work during a power outage. However, the simple fact is that, at least in the United States, almost no one has a phone that is operated by a single cord.
This photo was taken near my home in a Target store. My wife had requested that I pick up a few items on the way home. Since I was already in the shop, I decided to take a look at the phone section. They had a variety of phones, most of which were cordless, and every single one of them, corded or cordless, needed AC power.
Many of us that do have landlines can use a simple UPS to provide backup power in the event of a power outage. Some people get a UPS as part of their operation, most notably AT&T U-Verse customers. During a power outage, their voice line would be maintained.
