Kevin Hart performs material from his 2012 Let Me Explain comedy tour in this stand-up comedy concert video. It was directed by Leslie Small and Tim Story in front of a sold-out crowd at Madison Square Garden. The film also includes footage from other shows on Hart’s tour. If you like Kevin Hart’s stand-up comedy, you’ll probably enjoy the film, but if you don’t (like me), you’ll probably be disappointed (it’s that simple).
Kevin Hart starts the film by describing his relationship issues and recent success to his friends at a party. As he grows tired of having to justify himself, he comes up with the idea of putting on a show at Madison Square Garden where he can do just that. He then immediately rushes to a display in the area. Before playing the Madison Square Garden show in its entirety, the film shows excerpts from other concerts on his tour.
I like Kevin Hart in movies and think he’s a really funny and likeable actor, but I was underwhelmed by his stand-up comedy (in this film). I don’t think he’s relatable because he speaks too quickly and behaves like a spaz. His jokes are passable, but not particularly amusing. To be honest, I’m not a massive fan of most stand-up comedy; there are only a few comedians who can really make me laugh. As a result, I wouldn’t suggest Hart is significantly worse than anyone else. However, I was underwhelmed by this film.
Many people would claim to have seen Kevin Hart’s meteoric rise to fame. When I saw him on Comedy Central Presents a few years ago, I got on board midway and have been watching him ever since. He had a tremendous sense of moving off the audience’s vibe for a man so new to the game at the time, and he still does to this day, remaining self-aware of the public and not letting the fame go to his head in an identifiable way.
Kevin Hart: Laugh at My Pain, his first theatrical comedian special, was a passable film that would serve well as an introduction film, but it seemed to lack the real spark that his specials I’m a Grown Little Man and Seriously Funny possessed. Not to mention the film’s skits, which ranged from slightly humorous to dull and unfunny. It lasted about fifty minutes of stand-up comedy and thirty minutes of filler skits.
Needless to say, I had some reservations about Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain, which arrives in theaters with a marketing campaign that appears to be bigger and bolder than Laugh at My Pain’s. Especially because the film opens with a Tim Story-directed setup that is eerily similar to the one in the previous films.
Kevin Hart: Let Me Clarify is another example of why he’s gained mainstream success on his own terms, despite the fact that it’s ironically short on standup from Mr. Hart himself.
Kevin Hart, comedian and actor, performs in concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden during two sold-out shows in the follow-up to his 2011 film “Laugh at My Pain.” The film documents Hart’s 2012 international “Let Me Explain” concert tour, which grossed over $32.7 million in ticket sales.
