I’m having a strange problem. My business has nine locations as well as a corporate office. In my business, there are two IBM AS400s. We have a Windows infrastructure that includes file storage, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and all the other bells and whistles. We occasionally have issues with DNS and the older AS400. The following symptoms have been identified by users who use Client Access on this 400:
This can occur at any time during the day at both the corporate and branch locations. It can only be resolved by flushing, registering, or both on the workstation that is causing the problem several times. I initially assumed it was a DNS server issue, but I’m not convinced because the DNS server for the AS400 in question has complete entries, pointers, and reverse entries, and the problem only occurs on this one AS400 in my entire infrastructure.
I also discovered that the secondary DNS server (which WAS the main before the server upgrades) did not have an entry for that 400 when I used nslookup. (server: unknown address: IP *** unknown – can’t find 400host: non-existent domain) will be returned.

Recursive and iterative queries

On any Windows network, DNS is one of the most critical services. DNS is needed for Active Directory to operate, and it is also used by a variety of other network functions. As a result, it’s important to resolve DNS issues as soon as possible. Fortunately, the technique is generally straightforward. Here are ten of my favored DNS troubleshooting methods.
When DNS issues arise, one of the first things you can do is make sure the DNS server is still connected to the internet. After all, if the issue turns out to be anything as easy as a NIC failure, testing for it ahead of time will save you a lot of time.
Logging on to the DNS server and pinging a few devices is the simplest way to test compatibility. Ping the DNS server from a few different machines is also a good idea. Note that ping will only function if the firewall on the computer you’re pinging makes ICMP packets through.
Once you’ve confirmed that basic connectivity still exists, you’ll need to find out how big the issue is. Is it just Internet name resolution that’s failing, or is it also local name resolution that’s failing? The response will have an impact on how you will have to troubleshoot the problem. If local name resolution works but not Internet name resolution, the issue could be with one of your ISP’s DNS servers.
