This summer, you’ve been busy organizing and reworking lessons, adding, changing, and tweaking them. Let’s fast forward to the fall: We know that students listen a lot in class, but what about the other three communication skills they should be learning on a regular basis? Reading, writing, and speaking are the three skills I’m referring to.
Let’s start with a definition of literacy. Once upon a time, it was simply known as the ability to read and write. It’s all about being able to comprehend and participate in advanced reading, writing, listening, and communicating these days. Someone who has achieved advanced literacy in a foreign language, for example, will use their new language to participate in these four skills in any situation.

It’s a common misconception that literacy teaching is exclusively the duty of language arts teachers, but this is simply not true. “Adolescents entering the adult world in the twenty-first century can read and write more than at any other point in human history,” says Richard Vaca, author of Content Area Reading: Literacy and Learning Through the Curriculum. This literacy encompasses more than just learning how to read and write simple letters and sentences (though that is a good start); it also includes the ability to comprehend and articulate what you have read, as well as the ability to express yourself by writing.

What is the concept of global literacy?
The capacity of all people worldwide to recognise, perceive, evaluate, synthesize, develop, use, interact, and exchange new information with a global audience using the written word, multimedia, and communication technologies. An awareness that the world is multicultural, with distinct and subtle differences among individuals and cultural groups, both locally and globally.
Global literacy includes a wide variety of social and technical skills needed to work in a democratically pluralistic, shared culture in both local and global settings.
