Get xml from url
Java-send url http request and read xml response
I created a Python script that gathered data from every board game on BoardGameGeek and stored it in a SQLite database. This script took four days to run for the first time. I was able to improve it and rerun it, but it still took more than two days! I thought I could do it faster if I didn’t use the Python BGG XML API and instead learned a little about XML and how to parse the data on my own. In just a few hours, I was able to learn enough about XML and data parsing to get a new script up and running. BoardGameGeek throttled me and finally kicked me off for overloading the website because the script ran too quickly. Using the XML directly caused the script to run so quickly that I had to slow it down!
What exactly is XML?
Extensible Markup Language (XML) is an acronym for “Extensible Markup Language.” A markup language is a way of writing a document that makes the text stand out from the formatting and other syntax. A markup language is something you’ve probably seen before. HTML, XML, and TeX are only a few examples. XML is useful because it is both human and machine readable. It aspires to be simple, general, and easy to use. The picture below shows an example of XML. There are a few definitions we’ll need to know in order to work with XML effectively. To begin, tags are used to create XML. A tag is always preceded by the letters and followed by the letters >. There will be a start-tag that looks like this: (note, the word could be anything). As a consequence, the tag’s end-tag will be. The final concept we’ll cover in this tutorial is attributes. If any attributes exist, they will be found within a tag. There will be name/value pairs in the tag. In the picture above, for example, we can see the line:
I’m attempting to create a dashboard widget that will use the W3 Validator to conduct a validation check on a site’s RSS feed. The process is documented in their API documentation (http://feed2.w3.org/docs/soap.html). Here’s my data-gathering function:
WordPress doesn’t have any built-in features; instead, it relies on PHP’s built-in features. SimpleXML is something I like (and use) as long as the XML isn’t too big (I mean very big), so you can simply transfer the entire XML string to it and get an object to work with.
