Random reviews ep.42: $1 fix it pro car scratch repair pen
A scratch repair pen could appear to be a good idea on the surface. What’s not to like about easily fixing the finish on your car by simply drawing a line along the damage? It turns out that the consequences aren’t necessarily what you see on screen.
The pens, which cost $10 or less, are sold as a cost-effective way to prevent costly auto body shop bills, according to the manufacturers. We took three samples to see if the statements were correct.
The Simoniz Fix it Pro ($8), DuPont Pro Fusion Color ($9), and Turtle Wax Scratch Repair Pen ($10) can all be found online or in auto parts stores. They contain a permanent clear coat, similar to the protective exterior coating used on new cars from the manufacturer, and claim to work with any color paint. However, their packaging does not make it clear that these pens are just for scratching the clear coat’s surface. You’re out of luck if the damage extends to the paint below.
We also discovered that the pens can be difficult to use, and that getting the small, even line required to neatly fill scratches without overdoing it is difficult. Our sampled items make it difficult to avoid adding too much filler and leaving a clear residue that is more noticeable than the damage you’re trying to patch, with applicator tips that are as large as or wider than a normal scratch. And getting rid of that residue could necessitate some sanding and buffing, as well as touch-up paint.

The more you drive a car, the more nicks, dings, and bruises it will accumulate. If you care about your car’s appearance, it’s a good idea to invest in a tool that will help you remove scratches from the paintwork. There are several decent scratch removers on the market, but which one you use and when depends on the severity of the scratch. If the scratch is minor, a rubbing compound or polishing compound might be all you need. We take the cars that come through the Roadshow garage to a number of different locations, and superficial scratches and swirls in the paint are unavoidable. That means we’re the perfect candidates to try out various scratch removers because we want to keep those cars looking fantastic. As a result, we spent a lot of time testing different car paint scratch removers, rubbing additives, and polishes to see which ones work well with just a microfiber cloth and a little elbow grease, and which ones don’t. Our top picks are listed below, so keep reading to find out which one is right for you and get some expert advice. A word of warning, though: if you have a deep scratch, these might not be safe. A car paint expert is likely needed for deeper scratches. Continue reading: The Top 10 Car Waxes for 2021
