[No. 139] “FB5” was the name given to a redesign of the website and mobile app. (140) Plans for improving communities, a dating site, end-to-end encryption on its sites, and enabling Messenger users to connect directly with WhatsApp and Instagram users were also announced at the event. Ptail, an internally developed method for aggregating data from multiple Scribe stores, is used to read data from these log files. It follows the log files and extracts data. Ptail data is split into three sources and distributed through several data centers (Plugin impressions, News feed impressions, and Behavior (plugin + news feed)). Puma is used to handle high data flow times (also known as input/output or IO). Data is stored in batches to minimize the amount of times it must be read and written during periods of high demand (A hot article generates many impressions and news feed impressions that cause huge data skews). Batches are taken every 1.5 seconds, with the number of batches restricted by the amount of memory used to create the hash table. (173)

However, beginning from scratch with a client-first app presented a new set of challenges. We needed to rapidly redesign the tech stack while still resolving pace and other user interface problems, and we needed to do so in a way that would be long-term sustainable.
When loading the homepage on our old site, we were loading more than 400 KB of compressed CSS (2 MB uncompressed), but only 10% of that was actually used for the initial render. We didn’t start with a lot of CSS; it just expanded over time and only occasionally shrank. This was partly due to the fact that each new feature necessitated the addition of new CSS.
We solved this problem by producing atomic CSS during the construct process. Because the number of unique style declarations is proportional to the number of styles and features we write, atomic CSS has a logarithmic growth curve. This allows us to compile all of our site’s produced atomic CSS into a single, small shared stylesheet. As a result, the current homepage only downloads around 20% of the CSS that the old site did.
