Edgewood high school safety measures heightened
TRENTON, Ohio (CBS/AP) — Edgewood City Schools cancelled all classes on Wednesday morning after a student threatened to “shoot up the campus,” according to Pam Pratt, director of public relations. The student who made the threat was apprehended by the authorities. The Butler County Sheriff’s Office also looked into a second person’s possible involvement, but found no evidence to back it up.
Deputies informed the district early Wednesday morning that an Edgewood High School freshman and another unidentified individual had made an online threat against the school late Tuesday night, according to Pratt. The threat was noticed by someone who alerted authorities. According to Pratt, deputies needed more time to investigate a potential second person involved, so the school’s administration agreed to cancel Wednesday classes out of “an abundance of caution to keep all of our students and staff safe.” When school was cancelled at 6:35 a.m., some Edgewood Middle School students were already on buses. Until their parents picked them up, these students were held in a safe location under lockdown. Many of the children have been safely reunited with their parents or guardians, according to the district. The school district appreciates the Butler County Sheriff’s Office’s swift response, according to Pratt. “We have so many students in this district that we want to keep safe, and their actions today have definitely helped us do that,” Pratt said. All after-school events on Wednesday will take place as planned.

Divide the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers to get the student/teacher ratio. Please keep in mind that a lower student-to-teacher ratio does not always imply a smaller class size. Schools occasionally employ part-time teachers, and some teachers are hired for specialized teaching with limited class sizes. The student-to-teacher ratio is determined by these and other factors. Pre-Kindergarten may not be included of the student/teacher ratio in private schools.
