Earl Jones is a substantial man with clear blue eyes and weathered hands. His voice still has remnants of the southern lilt he picked up during years in Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana, even after 25 years in Oregon. On his parents’ farm in Kentucky, he drove a tractor between rows of corn, wheat, and soybeans as a boy, but science was his true love. He never wanted to develop anything again after leaving home to attend Tulane University in New Orleans. Instead, he applied his sharp analytical mind to the area of medicine.
Earl was introduced to fine wine by a chance encounter with a bottle of Pouilley-Fuissé while in college. Drinking was confined on the farm to the odd dram of whisky at Christmas. Now he knew that wine held a whole world of culture, history, and sensory delight. Earl went on to serve as an immunology researcher after receiving his MD. He met Hilda while teaching at Emory University in Atlanta. They married after a year of courtship and spent their time together learning about wine, especially Rioja wines, which went well with their favorite foods.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Darth Vader’s voice will be the Declaration of Independence’s voice. James Earl Jones, whose deep baritone brought the sinister villain of the “Star Wars” films to life, will be in Philadelphia tomorrow to help open a Magna Carta exhibit at the National Constitution Center. One day before the Fourth of July, the Broadway and movie star who played King Mufasa in “The Lion King” — as well as numerous Verizon ads — will recite the Declaration of Independence at the “Magna Carta: Foundation of Freedom” show. “This is an opportunity to reflect on the declaration itself — apart from the holiday, aside from the great explosions and bombs exploding in the air,” Jones said on ABC’s “This Week” yesterday. The National Education Association is hosting the exhibit, which is funded by Verizon Communications and will run from July 4 to July 25. The Magna Carta is on loan from Lincoln Cathedral in the United Kingdom. The center also has a signed Emancipation Decree and a printing of the United States Constitution, in addition to the Magna Carta, a 1215 document that inspired the Declaration of Independence.
