Darryl Adams gave an iPad to each of the 18,000 students in California’s Coachella Valley Unified School District, one of the poorest districts in the country. Then he put Wi-Fi on school buses and parked them in the district’s 1,250 square miles, enabling those children’s iPads to connect to the internet.
The former superintendent tells The 74, “The system was not preparing the students for life after high school.” “You have to be able to use the resources available to compete, and technology was really beginning to boom in education, but only the wealthy school districts were doing it.” I didn’t think that was appropriate, even though our group was one of the poorest in the country.”
Adams attracted the attention of the education community — including the education tech world — when he supported Measure X in 2012, which won massive voter support for a $42 million bond to fund 18,000 iPads, additional access, and teacher preparation. His was the country’s first district to do so. Adams was named one of the Top 100 Innovative Superintendents by then-President Barack Obama in 2014, and he was widely lauded for enabling access to technology and the internet.
