The desktop image enables you to try Kubuntu without having to make any changes to your device, with the option to install it permanently later. This is the picture that the majority of people would want to use. To install from this image, you’ll need at least 384MB of RAM.
Choose this choice to get the most out of computers with AMD64 or EM64T architectures (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon, Core 2). Use the i386 images instead if you have an AMD processor that isn’t 64-bit or if you need complete support for 32-bit code.
Almost all PCs are supported. Most computers with Intel/AMD/etc style processors and almost all computers running Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors, fall into this category. If you’re unsure, go with this choice.

Kubuntu (/kbntu/ kuu-BUUN-too)[4] is an Ubuntu operating system version that uses the KDE Plasma Desktop instead of the GNOME desktop setting. Kubuntu uses the same underlying technologies as the Ubuntu project. Kubuntu uses the same repositories as Ubuntu[5] for all of its packages, and it launches on the same timeline as Ubuntu. [number six]
Canonical Ltd. funded Kubuntu until 2012, after which Blue Systems took over. Blue Systems employees now contribute to KDE and Debian upstream, and Kubuntu development is led by community contributors. Kubuntu continued to use Ubuntu project servers and existing developers throughout the transition. [nine]
Canonical owns the registered trademark “Kubuntu.”
[eight] It is derived from the word “Ubuntu,” with a K prefixed to denote the KDE platform on which Kubuntu is based, as well as the KDE community (following a common naming convention of prefixing K to the name of any program released for use on KDE platforms).

Lubuntu 14.04 LTS, which is based on the lightweight LXDE desktop environment, is an excellent option for those whose computers would otherwise creak under the weight of resource-intensive desktops like Unity.
Upgraders from previous Lubuntu versions won’t note many noticeable differences. Rather than adding new functionality, the emphasis has been on stabilizing and enhancing what already exists. That isn’t to suggest it isn’t worthwhile to upgrade to; quite the opposite. The files app also has a dual-pane mode for advanced file management, as well as a slew of new folder settings; menu editing features have been introduced, and web browsing is handled by the latest version of Firefox. Office needs are fulfilled by AbiWord and Gnumeric.
A brand new application menu for launching and locating your applications and device settings, as well as a new lock screen named ‘Light Locker’ that matches the login screen, are among the more noteworthy improvements.
GNOME 3.10, Ubuntu’s GNOME-based brother, was launched last autumn. Although this isn’t the most recent version of the famous open-source desktop (version 3.12 was published earlier this year), it does provide a number of enhancements that anyone upgrading from a previous version can appreciate.

Edubuntu 14.04 lts trusty tahr : install and review

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS was recently launched, and Kubuntu 14.04 was released shortly after. For several years, Kubuntu has been my main operating system. It blends the wonderful KDE desktop with Ubuntu’s app-rich climate.
If you’ve just installed Kubuntu, you can change a few settings and add some software to ensure that everything from multimedia to office apps and web features runs smoothly.
The software-properties-gtk command is a graphical interface for configuring and managing Ubuntu repositories. If it’s installed, the Settings > Repositories option in synaptic package manager will launch it. Otherwise, a new dialog box appears with very few options.
You must run the command with kdesudo whenever you need to open a folder or file with root privileges. Adding the “Root Behavior” service to dolphin is a less complex way to do it. It would add options to the right-click menu that would allow you to open a folder or file as root with just one click. Of course, you’d have to type the password, but it’s a time saver nevertheless.
