As you may be aware, as a teacher, you are in a unique position to offer valuable guidance and insight to your students on topics such as online safety and digital citizenship. We want to give you the tools you need to make your students feel as comfortable in the virtual classroom as they do in the “real world.”
When using social media or other devices in the classroom, teachers can understand many facets of digital citizenship. To begin, here are two tools that include numerous practical suggestions for teaching students about what it means to be a responsible digital citizen. These tools are geared toward students and provide a variety of suggestions about how to use them in the classroom.

A student in Michigan was suspended for profanity in a tweet urging his district superintendent to clear the snow from the school parking lot. A high school student in Maine was suspended after tweeting that administrators’ poor treatment of students meant that “they’re calling to be the next Columbine.” In Florida, a student was suspended for cyberbullying a coach with a single tweet that reportedly retaliated for an attack the coach had previously directed at her.
“In today’s world, everyone has enough opportunities to express their opinions on a wide range of topics through social media. Our district’s emphasis is always on assisting students in learning how to use the resources they have at their disposal in the most effective way possible. We want them to express themselves, but we also want to show them how to do so properly.”
What Durflinger describes is a challenging challenge, and it’s not always clear that we’re striking the right balance between school needs and students’ constitutional rights, particularly when students express themselves outside of the classroom.
