Dell’s XPS laptop line has a long history of being conservative. For years, the basic design of the XPS 13 and 15 models has remained the same, with only slight feature changes between generations. Neither of them is especially exciting; rather, they are practical workhorses built to be as functional as possible while remaining lightweight and portable.
The XPS 13 2-in-1, on the other hand, has taken a riskier approach. The first edition, which was released nearly three years ago, took the XPS design language and incorporated a 360-degree hinge for converting the laptop to a tablet. It went all-in on USB-C, abandoning the conventional USB-A ports that were still present on the mainstream XPS 13 at the time, and relied on a slower, fanless processor. Despite its higher price, the result was a machine that was more constrained than the regular XPS 13.
So Dell has updated the XPS 13 2-in-1 with a more powerful (not fanless) processor, a new keyboard and trackpad, an improved monitor, and an overall better design than the original. The XPS 13 2-in-1, which starts at $999.99 and goes up to $1,749.99 (as tested), is the most interesting — and convincing — XPS 13 laptop I’ve used in years. However, there are a few reasons why you should stick with the basic edition.

A convertible laptop, 2-in-1 tablet, 2-in-1 laptop, 2-in-1 detachable,[1] laplet,[2][3] tabtop, laptop tablet, or simply 2-in-1 is a portable computer that combines the features of both tablets and laptops.
Before the term “2-in-1” was coined, technology journalists used the terms “convertible” and “hybrid” to describe pre-two-in-1 portable computers: Convertibles had a mechanism to hide the physical keyboard behind the frame by sliding or rotating it, while hybrids had a hot-pluggable, complementary physical keyboard. Pre-two-in-one convertibles and hybrids were crossover products that merged tablet and laptop features. The later 2-in-1 PCs belong to the same group as the pre-2-in-1 convertibles and hybrids. The two species of 2-in-1 PCs are different from the two species of pre-2-in-1 PCs because 2-in-1 PCs have additional features of conventional laptops. Despite borrowing the terminology of the pre-2-in-1 PCs, the two species of 2-in-1 PCs are similar.
