National CSS created the VP/CSS time-sharing operating system. It started as a copy of IBM’s CP/CMS, which was distributed to IBM customers free of charge in source code form with no support as part of the IBM Type-III Library in 1968. National CSS took VP/CSS in a different direction from CP/CMS through extensive in-house growth, in what is now known as a software fork. Despite the fact that the two systems ultimately shared many features, their technological implementations differed significantly.
NCSS owned IBM and IBM plug compatible hardware, which was used to run VP/CSS (and by a few customers with site licenses, including Bank of America and Standard Oil of California). VP/CSS was ported to the System/370 series after an initial time running on the IBM System/360-67 platform used by CP/CMS, which was made possible when IBM introduced virtual memory capabilities to the S/370 series in 1972.
As compared to other IBM mainframe operating systems, VP/CSS was noteworthy for having very large numbers of interactive users per computer. National CSS became a commercially viable service company due to a combination of technological, operational, and commercial factors.

Howard Oakley says the update to macOS 11.0.1 Big Sur went smoothly. Good news, but I’m waiting for the 11.1 update while keeping my Time Machine updates in order: I retired the old Time Capsule, removed the hard disk, and repurposed it as a local Time Machine backup disk in preparation for the Big Sur big move. Goodbye, Time Machine backups on your NAS.
As Oakley pointed out shortly after WWDC20, and as Ars Technica confirms in their Big Sur analysis, there are two Time Machine options for upgrading to Big Sur: 1) the traditional HFS+ hard connection method, and 2) the APFS snapshot method. There is no way to move from HFS+ to APFS Time Machine without reinstalling anything. As seen in the video, the default Big Sur Time Machine setting formats a new disk as APFS. HFS+ Time Machine backups are no longer available.
I also strongly advise that you start making a new backup collection with Big Sur, regardless of whether you use HFS+ or APFS to store your Time Machine backups in the future. You’ll have to do that anyway if you turn to APFS, but considering the issues with Catalina, you’ll be much better off archiving your old backup package and starting over.
