Gab and Dos, two strangers, became entangled in fate when they married by mistake. How do you do it? What is the reason for this? When and where are you going? There’s more, what is it? Can Dos comply with Gab’s order for an annulment (as soon as possible, mind you!)? Will the procedure be straightforward, or will anything stand in the way?
CHFIL is one of the few Pinoy films I’ve seen in a theater. What is the reason for this? Since they usually have heartbreaking scenes that I’m not sure I’d be able to handle in a movie theater. Then why did I bother to watch? I’m excited to see what Kathryn Bernardo has in store with this new deal. This is a book I would really recommend to anyone looking for a feel-good story of substance. True, the events portrayed in the film are far from reality, but they are not impossible. Then there are the stars, who you can’t help but imagine behaving ridiculous and being silly in real life while watching. You can’t help but wish for it to be true. You’re spending time and space with them, watching their moments when they fall in love. You can’t help but wish that you could find the same kind of passion, that you could find your own Gabgab, that you could find your own Dos.

Gab (Kathryn Bernardo) is a “near-perfect girl” who is getting married in the United States to her long-time boyfriend and soon-to-be lawyer, Jason (Matteo Guidicelli). Her life is turned upside down, though, when she learns that she is already married – to a complete stranger, the happy-go-lucky Dos (Daniel Padilla). Gab begins violating her own rules when she and Dos find out how this improbable occurrence occurred in order to survive their perplexing situation. Idle, Torrent, Alex’s most recent work, was created in direct response to this uneasy feeling. It started as a simple exercise in which Alex would sit and breathe while freely developing. He says, “It was first a tool to find insight and open myself up to accepting change.”
As a consequence, the short film is a naturalistic reflection on this turbulent era. It introduces what appears to be multiple characters morphing and changing into one another through a series of vivid transformations, despite the lack of any real plot. “Throughout the piece, the characters are all really the same character,” Alex observes. “Every time there is a break in the film, the character sits with themselves and takes a breather and a moment to think before the next wave arrives.” This constant change, in turn, reflects self-improvement and patience.
In his first week in New York, Alex developed the central character through a series of line drawings. He remembers sitting on the floor of his empty bedroom, looking into a mirror during a phone interview for a role for which he was grossly underqualified. “I began doodling on the side of the road, simplifying my own pose into these mechanical line drawings.” Above everything, Alex Moy: Torrent, Idle Alex began working on the animation for this character, and the short was created in a haphazard fashion. The piece alternates between open stillness and chaotic movement, and the color palette, which was influenced by Alex’s childhood, represents this. “Being biracial, I spent a lot of my childhood in Chinatown with my family. The colors were loud enough to be felt, but not so loud that the audience became fixated on one aspect of the composition, so it was felt but still digestible,” he continues. After the visuals were finalized, Alex collaborated with sound designer Bryan Natalio, whose contribution creates a calm and serene environment.
