In the United States, there have been nearly 3,800 confirmed hate crimes targeting Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the last year, with far more possibly going unreported. AAPI women have been the subject of 68 percent of these hate crimes, and the elderly have been the victims of many physical assaults. (Data courtesy of Stop AAPI Hate.) We continue to be saddened by the tragedy in Georgia, where eight people were killed, six of whom were Asian American women; the horrific shooting in a Colorado supermarket yesterday; and the many other acts of violence and inequality that continue to wreak havoc on our diverse, under-resourced communities this pandemic year.
