Has anybody else had avast antivirus trigger game crashes? Steam and Oblivion are the most common causes of crashes for me. When playing games, I know you’re supposed to turn it off, but that’s easier said than done.
Before playing a game, I typically select “Stop On-Access Defense” from their menu, and then go to troubleshooting and check “disable avast self-defence module.” This seems to improve, but I still get the occasional crash to desktop while playing.
My computer is a Dell P4 3GHz (1.5GB RAM) with WinXP SP3 and a Radeon X1950 Pro graphics card (256MB). It’s well-ventilated, and I use a big external desk fan to blow away hot air at the back of the machine, so I don’t think it’s overheating. I’m just curious if I’m disabling the antivirus correctly, or if you can’t fully uninstall it.
I used to have Norton Antivirus, but it was slowing down my machine and triggering a ‘looping sound crash’ while playing Steam games (especially hl2). So I uninstalled Norton and replaced it with a faster machine that was resistant to any virus. Steam even performed flawlessly. It certainly fixed the looping sound crash that had so many people perplexed. However, Steam’s tech support documentation states that you can still run Steam without any antivirus program! Which I believe is a challenge for most people.

I just tested my Android 8 smartphone (Nexus 5x). Updates aren’t performed automatically or by hand. The only way to keep up with the new definitions is to reinstall the app on a regular basis. I’m hoping this will be resolved shortly.

I’ve already tried a fix: the same outcome I then uninstalled and reinstalled the program with the same result. So I’m in desperate need of assistance because I don’t have any antivirus software anymore!

I’m in the same boat as you.
It is always crashing on my end, and I still have the problem that when I open the program without doing something, it just closes it completely, even the tiny icon in the right corner of the Desktop vanishes, and only when I try to open it again does it remain, so please do something!
I tested my machine this morning after checking the forum to see if the issue had been resolved, but it was still broken. I was able to get it to function by opening the UI, going to Menu (upper right), Settings, Troubleshooting, and finally Repair App. This was done on three different machines. It would sometimes crash before finishing, and it would take two or three tries to complete. I reopened the UI after it was fixed, and it asked me to restart. All seems to be in order after the restart.
