[whtaguy] found a null pointer dereference (CVE-2020-8437) in the uTorrent client, which was recently patched. The dereference actually crashes the client; an actual RCE has yet to be discovered. It’s likely that this bug is restricted to denial of service due to the existence of the null pointer dereference. That’s excellent news, since the error is really easy to spot.
BitTorrent is a well-thought-out protocol. Large files, such as Linux ISOs, are still distributed using this form. The idea is straightforward: Divide a wide file into smaller pieces. Send the chunks one by one to the client. When a chunk is sent, the client copies it and sends it to the next client. The bandwidth available to the server is significantly increased as a result of this peer-to-peer (p2p) arrangement. The sticking point, as with all other peer-to-peer arrangements, is how to make those connections between peers, particularly when the majority of the world’s desktops are behind NAT routers. In practice, at least one peer must have a port opened or forwarded to the client for two peers to exchange data. The NAT Port Mapping Protocol or Universal Plug-n-Play (UPnP) are commonly used to accomplish this (NAT-PMP). Both protocols operate on the same principle: a client on an internal computer may request a temporary port forward without the need for manual intervention. Allowing automatic port forwards is a different subject for another day.

uTorrent is a lightweight BitTorrent client for Windows that is both efficient and feature-rich. uTorrent includes most of the features found in other BitTorrent clients, such as bandwidth prioritization, scheduling, RSS auto-downloading, and Mainline DHT (compatible with BitComet). uTorrent was developed with the intention of using as little CPU, memory, and disk space as possible while still delivering all of the features required of advanced clients. It does not hog precious device resources, allowing you to use the machine as though it were not there at all, unlike many torrent clients.
The 2.x branch’s last stable version without ads is uTorrent 2.2.1 Build 25302. It is the best version of uTorrent prior to any of the controversy surrounding version 3.x. It will run on Windows XP and later, including 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and 8. This version of uTorrent also supports localization and will default to your device language if a language file is present (the language pack is available for download at bottom of this page). Place utorrent.lng in the percent AppData percent uTorrent folder to install it.
