Alan November is a thought leader in the area of educational technology on a global scale. He started his career as an oceanography teacher and dorm counselor at a Boston Harbor island reform school for students. He’s worked as a high school director, a computer coordinator, a technology consultant, and a university lecturer. He has used technology to help colleges, governments, and business leaders enhance the quality of education. Audiences appreciate Alan’s wit and humor as he explores new ways to improve teaching and learning. Planning around the curriculum, personnel development, new school design, community building, and leadership development are among his specialties. He’s given keynotes and seminars in all 50 states, as well as throughout Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, and Central America.
Alan was named one of Tech and Learning magazine’s fifteen most influential thinkers of the decade. Numerous publications and best-selling books are among his works. Alan’s most recent book, “Who Owns the Learning?” is a New York Times best seller in the education category for 2013. Alan is most proud of being named one of the original five national Christa McAuliffe Educators and co-founder of the Stanford Institute for Educational Leadership Through Technology.

Although the world outside the classroom has progressed, classroom teaching has not. Students are expected to concentrate only on the curriculum, ignoring the value of having a mission and making a positive contribution. Although the world outside the classroom has progressed, classroom teaching has not. Students are expected to concentrate only on the curriculum, ignoring the value of having a mission and making a positive contribution. Furthermore, this outdated approach ignores students’ natural desire to direct their own learning. Author Alan November uses his Digital Learning Farm education model in Who Owns the Learning? to show teachers how technology helps students to take control of their learning, develop their own learning resources, and engage in meaningful work for themselves and others. Every student is a teacher and a global publisher in this model. The first chapter discusses what a Digital Learning Farm is and how it can help students learn more effectively. Each of the following chapters focuses on a particular job for students in the digital learning farm and includes examples of students completing it. In each chapter, November also includes a story about how the job is used in schools, techniques for educators to use the work in their classrooms, and discussion questions. Finally, in chapter six, November provides an example of students taking control of their learning through technology. This book is for teachers who want to bring their classrooms into the twenty-first century by integrating technology and resources for students to direct their own learning.
